Cocaine and Fentanyl…The Deadly Mix!

Cocaine and FentanylCocaine and Fentanyl are a dangerous mix. Fentanyl is a powerful synthetic opioid that is up to 100 times more potent than morphine.

It is often used to cut or lace other drugs, like cocaine because it is cheap and easy to obtain. This is a deadly combination because it is hard to know how much Fentanyl is in the cocaine, and it only takes a very small amount to cause an overdose.

One year since my younger brother was found dead behind a building in Huntsville, Alabama, on May 11, 2021. His body lay there for three days before anybody found him.

Today, May 12, 2022, marks one year since the task of planning a memorial service for my brother fell to me.

Yesterday

We were shocked, and we are still shocked today! According to his toxicology report, his death was caused by Fentanyl and cocaine.

I’ll tell you…We couldn’t have an open casket because his body wasn’t “fit” for viewing after being outside in the heat of Alabama for so long… he was cremated instead.

My heart broke looking at the photo of his body lying on the table in the coroners’ office. Realized that I couldn’t believe what I was looking at.

That said, I don’t have to wonder where he at. See, he is in my home today, sitting on top of a table that constantly reminds me of where I can find him.

My brother’s death… is one of those moments when you think this couldn’t happen in my family.

A year on…

I am still trying to figure out why my brother engaged in such a deadly mix. Could he have known what the drugs contained? No!

Dealers who sell Fentanyl may mix it with heroin, cocaine, methamphetamine, and MDMA.

Fentanyl is a cheaper option because it only requires a small amount to produce a high. People who take drugs might not realize they might contain Fentanyl as a cheap but dangerous additive.

CDC statistics

Show that opioid overdose deaths have increased in three waves.

  1. The first wave began with increased prescribing of opioids in the 1990s, with overdose deaths involving prescription opioids (natural and semi-synthetic opioids and methadone) increasing since at least 1999.
  2. The second wave began in 2010, with rapid increases in overdose deaths involving heroin
  3. The third wave began in 2013, with significant increases in overdose deaths involving synthetic opioids, particularly those involving illicitly manufactured Fentanyl
  4. The market for illicitly manufactured Fentanyl continues to change, and it can be found in combination with heroin, counterfeit pills, and cocaine.
